Marriage Equality Explained
The QLaw Foundation was excited to participate in the Marriage Equality Explained event on December 3, 2012. Two of our Board Members, David Ward (also of Legal Voice) and Jill Mullins were on the panel. In addition to the
Q&A the QLaw Foundation prepared, the QLaw Foundation is joined forces with Lambda Legal, Legal Voice, and the ACLU of Washington to create a Marriage Equality Fact Sheet.
All of the legal organizations worked together with Pride Foundation, the GSBA, Equal Rights Washington, Outlaws, the Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG, and our media sponsors: SGN, and the Seattle Lesbian, to host a forum. The event is available via the Seattle Channel podcast. The forum discussed the many legal issues that persist around marriage due to federal and state failures to recognize same-sex marriages and will address questions on these issues you may not even know you had.
The panel was made up of the following individuals:
MC: Chris Hermanns
Legal Expert Panelists:
- David Ward - Legal Voice
-
Hank Balson -
ACLU cooperating attorney
- Shelbi Day - Lambda Legal
- Jill Mullins - QLaw Foundation
Moderated by: Anne Levinson
In addition, legislators Ed Murray, Jamie Pederson, and Laurie Jenkins discussed the legislative efforts. Ed Murray received a standing ovation for fighting the good fight on our behalf for the last 17 years. At the end of the event Policy Policy Experts Josh Friedas of ERW, Anne Levinson, and Kris Hermanns of the Pride Foundation discussed what's next for LGBT equality. Then Louise Chernins from the GSBA gave a speech about businesses who were and continue to be important allies in our struggle for equality.
